Before the internet existed, network marketing and home based business relied primarily on the marketer’s warm market. Most of the prospecting was done with family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances. This left many new marketers chasing after their brother-in-law who showed zero interest, or their best friend who thought it was a pyramid scheme. 
After making phone calls and writing lists of possible prospects, categorizing lists, and sorting “people I know”, the prospect most like felt limited and either failed or got discouraged by the time and energy it required and quit. The style of prospecting to the warm market was a big turn off for ‘real business men/women’ and often gave the industry a bad rap.
Now that the internet and world wide web is a way of life, the network marketing industry has the option, if the marketer chooses to eliminate the warm market all together. The marketer no longer needs to fully depend on referrals to fuel the business, but instead can lean on lead generation and auto-responders to get their job done, and in much less time. In this way, the marketer can treat this part time ‘home business’ like a business, not like a hobby. The feeling of chasing friends and family can be replaced with attracting others of like minds who actually want to join their business.
Home based businesses thanks to the internet can actually mean doing business at home and in front of a computer, ipad, or smartphone, and not at family reunions, get together, or holiday parties. If the marketer chooses, their warm market can be unnecessary as a part of building their business. They can keep their friends, be on good terms with the family, and work their business with confidence knowing that they have a real home business and not a hobby where they rely on their loved ones to fuel and fund the success of their new found ‘business’.
Once the cold market has been used and the marketer has experienced success, it is likely their warm market will inquire and want to join their business too. It is amazing how quickly the cold market can heat up the warm market and add gasoline to the fire of an already established business.
