Dieting and business go hand in hand…

running on treadmillWe have all been on a diet before and failed? Some of us if we were lucky lost the weight and kept it off. Others lost and then gained more weight than they started with. Many never lost any real weight. So why do some succeed and others don’t?

Of course we can argue that some have better metabolisms and others don’t. Some of us are genetically predisposed to be heavier than others. But when it comes down to it, most of us haven’t had the proper upbringing or training about keeping a balanced diet and possibly how to eat healthy. The reality is most of us lack DISCIPLINE to maintain a healthy eating plan.

What does this all have anything to do with our home business?

What I have come to realize is that the DISCIPLINE that is required to build a home business is like dieting. Whatever diet you choose to be on, you can probably lose weight if you followed the plan. But it is the DISCIPLINE of being CONSISTENT and PERSISTENT that will lead someone to become successful in their weight loss and their business.

So really, it doesn’t matter if someone wants to lose 10 pounds or 50 pounds. It is about their CONSISTENT effort and their determination to do the daily activities to reach their goal. This is no different to the efforts of building a home business.

The reason most people fail in the industry of direct distribution or network marketing is that like dieting they give up and don’t give it the CONSISTENT and PERSISTENT effort. They find holes and make interpretations to an already proven strategy or system. Or, they aspire to make six figures but only do the business in their spare time.

We’ve all heard about the incredible weight loss stories? You know these people who were incredibly overweight and through CONSISTENT exercise and diet reached their target weight? Some only took 6 months and others it might have taken a year. All the odds were against them. They came from obese families, maybe. But for some reason or another they were able to successfully shed the weight off. So how did they do it?

Typically when they lose the weight, their lives are transformed, between the way they feel about themselves and the way others view them.

In building our business we have a choice. In fact, we have a choice in everything we do in our lives. We can choose to do what others have done to be successful and surround ourselves with successful people, or we can continue along the same path and do nothing different.

Some of us have to travel down the longer path because either we are too stubborn to follow any one’s proven system, or too scared to do what is different.

I have a friend who says she wants to lose weight but every day pokes holes in her program. She adds milk to something that shouldn’t have milk. She continues to eat the food that are unhealthy and increase body fat. But she tells me she really wants to lose weight. But the truth is she doesn’t. The loss of weight is less of a priority to her than doing what is comfortable.

If she wanted to lose weight she would follow the system that others have done that have successfully lost weight.

The reality is that some people might have a better genetic code than others. Some people might have experienced more success in their lives, have a better education and possibly even a greater social circle, but it is the CONSISTENT and PERSISTENT effort that determines whether or not someone will reach their goals.

While some may take 6 months others may take 2 years…While some may talk to 20 people and others will talk to 300 people…It is this burning desire to want more than what you have that drives you to follow through with the daily efforts that is required to achieve your goal.

What typically happens when someone decides to lose weight is that they start overdoing it. They plan to go to the gym every day. They commit to working out for 1 hour. Then maybe they do a Spin class. And then after the first or second week they quit. The better plan would have been to exercise for 20-30 min three times per week and stay committed to this plan.

This is no different from many people who start a home business. We all want to hit the lottery and get rich quick. We might commit to making 10 calls a day and tell everyone about the business, but eventually with this plan many lose steam. It’s only natural.

We are all better off keeping to a plan we can stick with rather than a plan that we quit. Whether your plan is to call 2, 3, 5 people per day, staying CONSISTENT and being PERSISTENT with this plan is more important than the efforts of doing it once and big and never doing it again.

So if there is ever a secret in this industry that separates those who have been successful and those that haven’t…I would bet the people who have succeeded in reaching their goal were CONSISTENT and PERSISTENT with their plan and NEVER QUIT, while the people who failed simply stopped doing the daily activities.
