Are You Chicken for Your Chicken List?

magentic sponsoringWhy is it that when we think about who we want on our team we look down – to people who are less successful than our selves? Because we don’t want to take the risk of being evaluated or judged by our equals, we look to people who have had less success.

When you were told to make a list of your top 25 people to invite and share your business, were you guilty of what so many others did? Did you make the list and then edit the list? And then edit again? Did you write the top 25 and then start presenting your business to people not on your list? Were people purposely left off your list so you wouldn’t have to call them?

We know that if you want to be a millionaire you should associate yourself with millionaires, not the homeless, the unemployed, the wishful thinkers, or the occasional gamblers. It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional, an attorney, a corporate junkie, a teacher, a contractor, or a waitress, we all share a common fear in this business.

We all have a chicken list – a list of people who we categorize as being more successful than ourselves. While these people may be on your top 25, they remain on the list and we work around them. Instead, we keep sharing the opportunity to people who revere us.

When a college football coach thinks about putting together a winning team, he does not gather a group of unhealthy, poorly athletic individuals. The coach recruits the best players from different high schools. They are the fastest. The strongest. The most athletic students. Each player strives to be the best that he can be. In fact, if you become a coach known for what you do, the players come to you wanting to do whatever it takes to play on the team.

As you think about attracting the right people for your team, you want to recruit up, not down…You want to network and find people more successful than you. Unlike corporate America, you are carefully sifting to find your replacement, someone who offers greater skills and a bigger list than your own.

What provides you the confidence to attract people up is belief in yourself and being detached from the outcome. Because we place too much emphasis on the decision of people on our chicken list, we avoid speaking to them about the opportunity. While we place too much value on this group of successful people, being financially free may be what they are in pursuit for! So every time you edit your list, you take away the potential gift that could change a life forever.
