As you grow your business, give some thought to putting together the best football team. Are you only focused on attracting players who have established reputations and are known for their success on the field? Or, are you more interested in the commitment of your players to deliver the best that they have regardless of their past history?
I have to admit that I’m not much of a football fan. But I love those movies about the underdog player or the underdog team. There’s something that is romantic in the story about a player coming in having so much desire, who maybe has lost hope but wants to be a part of a winning team. And through persistence and a willingness of never giving up and enduring the painful attacks of others and their own poor self esteem get through the struggle to recognize their dreams!
I think these stories resonant in me because we all have this hope to succeed and be known for our accomplishments. Many of us understand struggles and pains of trying something and failing. And most of us may have had the overwhelming thoughts of aspiring to be like others who have succeeded.
You see the story of the player who walks onto the field and has the physical build and the natural talent, who has been groomed and trained all his life isn’t as inspiring to most people. Because the fact of the matter is that most of us in life are challenged with life in some area and we want to break free.
When we look for talented people to make up our team, I often talk about reaching out to the most successful people. Successful people know what it takes to build success. They already have a built in formula or the DNA make up. But there is also a very important component missing in this winning formula that has nothing to do with success at all.
The winning formula has nothing to do with whether or not someone is successful. You see someone can be successful but have no desire to change the status of their current life. A successful person may have acquired comfort and is ok with status quo. We are not in search of status quo. Let them go to another team.
We are in pursuit of a very special person. Contrary to the need to have money to start a business, it doesn’t matter your current financial situation. In fact, your educational background does not determine your rankings either. It is different from the traditional business. Your looks are not even a factor. Nor is your family genealogy a factor. Let them go to another team.
The most important component to someone when we are looking to build the best team is their determination for success. Is what they want important enough that regardless of the hurdles of the game, they are willing to play through to the end? You want to ask yourself, is this person a team player? Can they put their ego aside for the benefit of the group? If they can’t, let them go to another team.
Can they be reflective enough to put their baggage aside to allow themselves to change? Do they want to change? If they don’t, let them go to another team.
When the game is being played, the challenge is to get the players to not focus on the immediate point that is being played. Otherwise they will lose their breath and become tired after each play.
To build endurance and to get each player to commit to the process of giving their all, the best coach will have learned why each player is participating on the team. Yes, they need to enjoy the game of football. But their individual goal has to do with something larger. It is what the pursuit of playing football will provide for them in their lives. Some it will be success. Others, it is a way out of their current circumstance.
The greatest players not only think about changing their own lives through football, they think about what it can offer others in their community. And this desire to affect the lives of others is ultimately what drives them past their challenges and keeps them focused on maintaining their integrity and posture in the sport. If you notice, the best players in any sport are also known for their philanthropy.
Invite the players who have this determination and desire to change their lives. Invite the players who use their talents of the game as a vehicle to reach further out beyond their own needs. Invite the players who know absolutely where they want their lives to go and who are willing to show others how to get there.
